How Often Storage Unit Prices Change
From one week to the next, the online rate for the same storage unit changed 42% of the time. We compared 54,824 pairs of weekly prices collected between August 29, 2026 and October 12, 2026: 8,487 went up, 14,469 went down, and the rest held. When a rate moved, the typical move was 8% of the earlier rate.
How we measure it
We collect every tracked unit's online rate once a week. Each price is compared only with the same unit's price from the previous weekly check, 3 to 10 days earlier. A unit that missed a check is not compared across the gap, and a unit that appears or sells out does not count as a change. So the figures describe how rates move, not how the mix of units changes.
By operator
How often an operator changes its rates is part of how it prices, so this is shown per operator. It says nothing about which operator is cheaper: their rates are not the same kind of number, as the price page explains.
| Operator | Weekly comparisons | Rate changed | Went up | Went down | Typical move |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public Storage | 15,055 | 52% | 19% | 33% | 16% |
| Extra Space | 16,722 | 57% | 22% | 35% | 6% |
| CubeSmart | 11,671 | 37% | 12% | 24% | 5% |
| U-Haul | 11,376 | 12% | 4% | 8% | 12% |
Weekly moves are not a trend
Many small moves up and down can cancel out, so a week-to-week change says little about where prices are heading. Over a longer window, each unit is again compared with its own earlier price. Compared with the prices we collected between August 29, 2026 and September 14, 2026, the median storage unit is down 2.4% ($1/mo), across 12101 units priced on both dates: 2147 went up, 3566 held, and 6388 went down.
What this means when you rent
- A price you saw a week ago is not a quote. Check the operator's page on the day you book.
- If you are not in a hurry, look at the same unit again a week later. Its rate may be lower, but the unit may also be gone.
- Compare units on prices collected on the same day. Every city page on this site prints the date its prices were collected.
- Look at the offer as well as the rate. Offers change too, and an offer can be worth more than a small rate change. See what move-in deals are worth.
Questions
How often do storage unit prices change?
Often. From one weekly check to the next, the same unit's online rate changed 42% of the time across 54,824 weekly comparisons, and a typical change was 8% of the rate.
Should I wait for a storage price to drop?
Only if you can wait. Weekly moves go both ways: of 54,824 weekly comparisons, 14,469 rates went down and 8,487 went up. The unit can also rent out while you wait. If you need it now, compare the units available today on their full cost, including the offer.
Why did the storage price change after I looked at it?
Operators change online rates often. In our data, the same unit's rate regularly moves from one weekly check to the next. A price you saw last week is not a quote. Check the price on the operator's page on the day you book.
